Welcome to my full build and review of the Tamiya 1/72 scale F4U-1D Corsair!
Tamiya's little Corsair has earned a reputation as one of the best F4U kits available in 1/72 scale, with excellent detail and engineering straight from the box. This is my first time actually building one, so I wanted to find out whether it really lives up to that reputation — while also testing some of my own 3D-printed upgrades along the way...And what better aircraft to build than NZ5416 "Tutae Wera", a heavily weathered RNZAF F4U-1D Corsair that served in the Pacific during 1945 who's name translates to "S#!t Hot"...
Join me as I:
🔹 Build the Tamiya F4U-1D Corsair
🔹 Install my own 3D-printed Corsair cockpit upgrade
🔹 Upgrade the engine with my Pratt & Whitney R-2800 design
🔹 Test how well my upgrade parts actually fit the Tamiya kit
🔹 Vacuform copies of the original Tamiya canopies
🔹 Airbrush the aircraft in a weathered Gloss Sea Blue finish
🔹 Apply custom Laser Shark Designs decals for Tutae Wera
🔹 Experiment with fading and variation in Gloss Sea Blue
🔹 Recreate the Corsair's characteristic oil leaks and streaking
🔹 Add coral dust and operational weathering with oil paints
🔹 Finish the model and give my post-build review
This build was also an important test for my 3D-printable F4U-1 cockpit (https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/...) and R-2800 engine (https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/..., both of which are available through my Cults3D page.
