Why did the United States become one of the richest economies in history while much of Latin America fell behind in relative income? The answer is more complicated than “good institutions versus bad institutions.”
In this documentary, we investigate the forces behind the divide, from the Spanish silver mines of Potosí to the guano boom in Peru and the rise and relative decline of Argentina, once among the world’s higher-income countries.
🔎 WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO
We start in Nogales, a city split by the U.S.-Mexico border, where one street separates two very different economic realities. Then we examine three forces that shaped economic development in the Americas:
Who controlled wealth during colonization. We compare the Spanish colonial system with the English colonies, including the role of forced labor, land ownership, and political power. We look at how the mita system supplied workers to the Potosí silver mines, and why a country can produce enormous wealth without creating broad prosperity.
How independence changed the rules, but not for everyone. The United States and Latin American countries gained independence in the same era, but their paths diverged. We look at rivers, railways, immigration, public education, political instability, tax collection, and why investors need predictable rules before they commit capital. We also cover the problems of the United States, including slavery, the displacement of Indigenous peoples, and the Civil War.
Why resource wealth did not guarantee lasting prosperity. Peru’s guano exports generated huge government revenue, but heavy borrowing and dependence on one export left the country exposed. We trace the 1876 default and the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). Then we return to Argentina, whose fertile Pampas, railways, immigration, and agricultural exports made it wealthy around 1900, and ask why it struggled to keep its position after the Great Depression disrupted world trade.
📌 THE BIG IDEA
Prosperity depends on how power, incentives, market access, and the credibility of the state combine, and that combination can change over time. Colonial history mattered, but it did not decide every outcome. Geography mattered, but it did not make development impossible. Economists and historians still debate how much weight each factor deserves, and this video presents the evidence without pretending there is one simple cause.

⚠️ NOTE ON ACCURACY
This video is educational and simplifies a very complex history. Historians and economists disagree about how much weight to give colonial institutions, geography, disease, trade policy, and later political decisions. Dates and figures should be verified against primary and academic sources before being used in research or coursework.
