[Time] The Million-Dollar Suburban House [Time] The Weirdest Spaces in the Neighborhood [Time] Is This Really a Walkable Community? 00:00 Rating Waverly: Real or Fake? ----------------------- What happens when developers try to build a city from scratch? Welcome to Waverly Town Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, a suburban “lifestyle center” filled with expensive homes, restaurants, offices, parking garages, and eerily empty spaces. As an architect fascinated by urban design and liminal spaces, I wanted to find out whether Waverly is a genuinely walkable neighborhood or just another suburban development pretending to be a city. What I found was a strange world of artificial landscapes, disconnected buildings, sterile alleys, and parking garages overlooking million-dollar homes. Some parts are surprisingly pleasant, with outdoor dining, fountains, and pedestrian-friendly plazas. But venture a little further from the main street, and the illusion starts to fall apart. In this urban exploration, we’re investigating the strange atmosphere of modern suburban architecture, the hidden flaws of mixed-use developments, and why these artificial neighborhoods can feel so unsettling despite looking perfectly normal. And the prices? Some homes here cost nearly $1 million, while even the smallest apartments command surprisingly high rents. Is this the future of walkable suburban living, or an expensive version of urban life without the soul? At the end, I’ll rate Waverly on my scale from the Backrooms to a Swiss hillside village.
