Learn how to execute a power play breakout in hockey, moving the puck from your defensive zone through the neutral zone and entering the offensive zone with speed, support and multiple passing options. In this video, we break down a 5-on-4 power play breakout step by step, starting when the penalty-killing team clears the puck and ending with a controlled zone entry and transition into the offensive-zone power play setup. In this video: How to retrieve the puck after a penalty-kill clear Why the puck carrier should attack up the middle of the ice Using two low curls to provide immediate puck support Timing the breakout so players move up the ice together Why we don't want to force a one-on-one play against the forechecker Using simple, high-percentage passes when pressured How the two wingers stretch the penalty kill Creating multiple passing options through the neutral zone Reading and attacking a 1-1-2 penalty-kill forecheck Why players should move forward as a five-player unit Using width and three lanes to attack the offensive blue line Entering the zone with speed instead of getting angled toward the boards Using a drop or back pass when the initial attack is taken away Transitioning from the breakout into the overload power play The key to this power play breakout is support and options. Rather than sending one player up the ice to beat the penalty kill alone, all five players move together and adjust based on what the defending team gives them. We want to use the middle of the ice whenever possible, provide multiple passing options to the puck carrier and arrive at the offensive blue line with speed across three lanes. If pressure takes away one option, we use the support around the puck to find another. Once we gain the offensive zone, we can attack immediately if a scoring opportunity is available or establish our overload power play and begin moving the penalty kill. #Hockey #HockeyStrategy #HockeyCoaching #PowerPlay #PowerPlayBreakout #HockeyBreakout #ZoneEntry #HockeySystems #SpecialTeams #YouthHockey
