Learn how to run a 1-1-2 penalty kill forecheck in hockey and use pressure, angling and good positioning to make it difficult for the opposing power play to enter the offensive zone with control.
In this video, we break down the 1-1-2 penalty kill forecheck step by step, including the responsibilities of both forwards and defence as the opposing team attempts its power play breakout.
In this video:
How to set up the 1-1-2 penalty kill forecheck
Responsibilities of F1, F2 and the two defence
Why F1 shouldn't chase too deep when the opposition retrieves the puck
When to pressure a flat-footed puck carrier
How to mirror and angle a player carrying the puck with speed
Taking away the middle of the ice and preventing passes to the centre
Maintaining inside position through the neutral zone
How the two defence adjust as the rush develops
Challenging the puck carrier around the defensive blue line
Creating congestion before the opposition enters the zone
Forcing the power play to regroup, dump the puck or make a mistake
Transitioning into the penalty kill box once the opposition gains the zone
The objective isn't necessarily to steal the puck in the offensive zone. We want to control the opposition's path up the ice, take away easy passing options and make a controlled zone entry as difficult as possible.
If we can force the power play to pass backward and regroup, we've taken valuable time off the penalty. If we can force a dump-in instead of allowing a controlled entry, we give our penalty killers an opportunity to recover the puck and clear the zone.
This video pairs with our Penalty Kill Box video, which explains how we defend once the opposing power play establishes possession in our defensive zone.
