Saturday night in town: in the summer of 1940 a federal study found the streets of Irwin, Iowa, a village of 345 people, lined with cars, and noted that parking on the main street becomes a problem. Farm families came in on Wednesday and Saturday evenings to trade eggs against the store account, see a 25-cent picture show, dance at the old opera house, and be counted. This is what that evening cost, who came, and why it stopped. The record is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 1942 report on Irwin, the photographs Irving Rusinow took there in May 1941, Arthur Rothstein's 1939 photographs of Saturday night in Grundy Center and Iowa Falls, and the census. They show a custom only about one generation old in 1940, built by the automobile, and four forces that took it apart: the same car on better roads, fewer farms, the end of the weekly egg trade, and an evening worth staying home for. No document gives the date it ended. Hometown Almanac tells the everyday history of small-town America, from the records. The pictures are credited archive photographs (U.S. National Archives, Library of Congress) and AI-assisted illustrations, labelled on screen. Old prices are converted with the consumer price index to August 2026 dollars. The people of Irwin are not named in the study, and none are named here. 0:00 1940 · The Farmers' Days 6:28 Once a Month 9:24 Force One · The Same Car 12:35 Force Two · Fewer Farms 14:43 Force Three · The Egg Money 17:26 Force Four · The Evening at Home 19:42 Adding It Up Sources: • Edward O.
