Do Warm Parents Raise Narcissists? A 17-Year Study Has a Surprising Answer

A 17-year study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology followed 674 children from age 10 to 26, measuring family life with the child's reports, both parents' reports and video-coded home interactions, and then measuring narcissism from 14 to 26. Hostility, conflict and children blaming themselves for their parents' rows predicted the toxic, exploitative and fragile kinds of narcissism; warmth and good family relationships predicted the confident "I'm going to be great" kind — and not the toxic kinds. The effects were small, and most vanished once the teenager's own personality at 14–16 was taken into account.
