The smallest country on Earth is guarded by 135 Swiss soldiers, even though Swiss law makes it a crime for Swiss citizens to serve in a foreign army. How is that possible? This animated map documentary explains the Pontifical Swiss Guard: why a poor mountain country became Europe's biggest exporter of soldiers, why Pope Julius II hired them in 1506, what happened on 6 May 1527 in the Sack of Rome, and how Switzerland banned mercenary service but kept one exception. You will learn how the Swiss mercenary economy worked (Reisläufer, pikemen, pensions and capitulations), what happened at Marignano in 1515, why the Guard was abolished after 1527 and rebuilt in 1548, how Switzerland closed the trade with the 1848 constitution, the 1859 law and the 1927 military penal code, why the Federal Council calls the Guard "police service for a foreign state", and what it takes to join today (recruitment rules, training, the oath on 6 May, and the Michelangelo uniform myth). Historians' disagreements are flagged in the video, and contested numbers are attributed. CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro: The Smallest Army 1:04 1. The Export 4:08 2. The Warrior Pope 6:42 3.
