It’s Spooky Season, so we’re talking about what happens when a rebrand becomes a monster that eats your business. I'm joined by Caitlin of Copper Theory Creative to dissect Cracker Barrel’s short-lived logo and store redesign, and why the backlash was so swift.
We cover:
Why the rebrand backfired: Cracker Barrel’s goal was to bring in more customers, but the conversation seemingly stopped there. When you market to everyone, you end up marketing to no one.
Evolution vs. overhaul: Brands should evolve like species do, keeping their heart while adapting. Swapping a personality rich, farmer-and-barrel identity for something plain and sterile confused loyal fans and didn’t attract anyone new.
A missed opportunity: Fans were already hanging old family photos on Cracker Barrel walls as a viral trend. Instead of collaborating with that, the brand pivoted away from it.
Maybe it wasn’t a branding problem at all: Aging-out customers, weak digital reach to the kids-turned-parents audience, the menu, or the experience could have been the real issue. Are you looking at the right data before you change everything?
Trust is fragile: It takes ages to build and a second to lose, and backtracking on an announced rebrand doesn’t undo the damage.
The human touch: In a world of AI and instant gratification, people are craving real connection, and nostalgia and family time were Cracker Barrel’s biggest assets.
They also answer a listener question: Can a brand grow without risking its loyal fans? Yes, if you know why people are loyal in the first place and build from there.
Takeaway: Find the heart of your brand, protect it, and evolve around it.
