The water in your next glass might once have been somebody else’s pee. That sounds like a problem, but proper water treatment can make it safe to drink. Meanwhile, an AI data center can evaporate perfectly clean water and leave a nearby town with less available. How does that make sense?
If water never disappears, why are we running out?
In this video, we follow water from your glass to rivers, underground aquifers, cooling towers, clouds, and back again. We look at how AI data centers use water, why servers and powerful computer chips need cooling, and what happens when water evaporates to carry their heat away.
The tricky part is that “the water still exists” and “we have enough water here” are two very different things. Rain falling over the ocean doesn’t help a household with a dry tap.
We also break down water consumption vs. water withdrawal, two terms that get mixed up in discussions about AI’s environmental impact. Then we look beyond data center cooling to the electricity supply: power plants use water too, and hydroelectric reservoirs lose water through evaporation. A facility’s direct water use only tells part of the story.
Along the way, we cover:
• AI water consumption and the water footprint of data centers
• Server cooling, cooling towers, evaporation, and electricity-related water use
• US data center water estimates and future growth scenarios
• Why comparisons with golf course irrigation and agriculture need context
• Wastewater recycling, water purification, and Orange County’s drinking water treatment
• Groundwater depletion, irrigation, and the Ogallala aquifer
• Cape Town’s 2018 drought and the countdown to “Day Zero”
• Desalination, water infrastructure, and the limits of the water cycle
So, is AI draining the planet? And does a small national total mean a new data center can’t cause local problems? We look at both questions without skipping the awkward details: where the water comes from, what happens during a drought, how the electricity is generated, and whether companies publish enough information to judge individual sites.
If you’ve seen claims about how much water ChatGPT or artificial intelligence uses, this video gives you the background to understand what those claims measure, and what they leave out.
