Umtanum Creek Canyon | Golden Trees & Basalt Cliffs

When autumn weather tightens its grip and the sunlight fades, Umtanum Canyon glows with vibrant shades of color. The hike starts at the Umtanum Creek Recreation Area, about 12 miles down Canyon Road from I-90, Exit 109. After crossing the Yakima River on a long pedestrian suspension bridge, you pass beneath a railroad line and enter a canyon lined with steep basalt walls. The trail is almost level and passes a long-abandoned homestead. It branches into side trails, and the farther you venture up the canyon, the harder it becomes to follow.
