Under Biscayne Bay, there was once nothing but shallow water and mud. Then, in the early 1920s, a man named Carl Fisher stood on a dredge and pumped the bottom of the sea up onto the surface, until there was an island where there had never been one. He named the streets. He sold the lots. Within a few years they held the richest homes in America. But Fisher died a few miles away, nearly broke, in a rented cottage. This is the story of the island he pulled from the sea, and the boom that washed it away.
