He has been called “The God Of Trading”, “The Father Of Price Trading”, and “Creator Of Candlestick Patterns”. Not to forget, he was the first trader in the world to understand and take into account the behavioural or psychological aspect of trading while making profitable trades. We are talking about the one and only, Munehisa Honma. He was the one who devised a concept that today has become the language of trading all around the world, Candlestick patterns. His genius methodology of candlesticks from the 18th century was a well-kept secret by the Japanese until the 1980’s when the western world got to know about it and was spread to the whole wide world from there onwards. But who was this man, Munehisa Honma, who later became the GOD of the financial markets? Let’s go back to the era of the 18th century when Munehisa was born into a rice merchant family. To understand the journey of Munehisa Honma or Sokyu Honma as he was called in his childhood, we need to understand the economy of Japan back in 1724. At this time the most important and precious commodity was rice. More than food, rice was a culture, Rice growing villages lived their whole lives around the rice planting, growing and harvesting cycle. Various parts of this cycle were celebrated with festivals and formal ceremonies. As soon as Munehisa Honma joined his family occupation, he was at once fascinated with the price movements of rice every other season, every year. Such was his dedication to understanding the rice trade, that he decided to compile the prices of rice, its movement, upper circuit and lower circuit on day to day basis, as he had figured out that the most lucrative trades can be made if one has a better insight into the future trade-in Rice. He also got hold of the past 100 years of data on rice trading price movements. In his perseverance, Honma conceptualised his own language of tracking the rice trading data using candlestick patterns, which even today is a standard for technical analysis in the stock markets all over the world. But even after almost a decade of recording the rice trading market in a language that no one else understood, Honma was yet to get a breakthrough. He would spend hours looking at the candlestick charts to spot some patterns but he failed repeatedly. Then one fine day, Honma, after 15 years of hard work on data collections and thousands of pages of rice paper filled with candlestick charts, had his Eureka moment. Everything was now crystal clear to him, that by analyzing his data he could sufficiently predict the rice market movements.
