In 1964 Honda was losing the 250cc class to a two-stroke twin, and there was nothing left to develop in the four-cylinder it already had. A four-stroke fires once every two revolutions. A two-stroke fires every one. That is not a gap you close with refinement. Honda handed the problem to a 24-year-old engineer with an aeronautical degree. His answer: if the engine has to rev higher, every part inside has to get lighter — so make the pistons smaller, and to keep the same capacity, use more of them. Six cylinders in 245cc.
