The Prélude et Fugue sur le nom d'Alain Op.7 is written as a tribute to Jehan Alain, Maurice Duruflé's friend and colleague and the brother of the distinguished organist, Marie- Claire Alain. Jean Alain would undoubtedly have become a leading French composer, had his life not been cut tragically short at the outset of the second world war, aged just twenty nine. Duruflé extended the musical alphabet past H ( the German equivalent of B natural) to arrive at the theme on Jehan's name ALAIN (ADAAF) The final section of the Prélude is a direct quote from Alain's most pop.ular works, 'Litanies'. The double fugue is a stunning example of contrapuntal writing. The two subjects are expounded seperately in compound time. Tension is heightened until the piece ends in a blaze of glory! Played and recorded by Angela Sones on the Willis organ at the John Loughborough Pearson Church of St Michael and All Angels, Croydon on 6th October 2026. Prélude - 00.00 Fugue - 07.20
