Japanese Zen music for sleep | Koto and shakuhachi ambient before an old kabuki playhouse at dawn. For deep sleep, study, work and meditation.
🎋 Waon An – The Wandering Monk Series / The Path of Yūgen, No. 8 (Chapter VI): Kabuki
Koto, shakuhachi and sho, with the low breath of a nohkan flute.
Kabuki is said to have begun in 1603, when Izumo no Okuni performed her "kabuki dance" in Kyoto. The word comes from the verb kabuku — to lean, to slant; to step outside the ordinary.
Edo-period playhouses had no electric light; they were lit by the sun. Performances began at daybreak, around six in the morning, and ended at dusk.
At the front of the playhouse is a tiny entrance called the nezumi-kido, the "mouse door" — so low that guests had to stoop and pass through one at a time. Japan's oldest surviving playhouse, the Kanamaru-za (Former Konpira Grand Theatre) in Kotohira, Kagawa, built in 1835, still has one.
Before dawn. Only the lanterns are lit. A wandering monk stands before the empty playhouse.
In the sky hangs zangetsu, the lingering moon — the moon that stays on into the dawn, and also the title of a celebrated piece in the jiuta and koto repertoire.
On the beam above the little door, a few sparrows sit fluffed against the cold, waiting for the curtain.
The monk bows quietly to the door, and walks on.
The curtain will rise again today. Here is the stillness just before it — for a night of deep sleep.
