Ancientknown as Gusu, Suzhou lies in the Yangtze River Delta. It is just a halfhour highspeedrail ride away from Shanghai. Often called the Venice of the East, it blends the artistic heritage of Florence with the watertown charm of canal cities, boasting an urban history of over 2,500 years. The old town is crisscrossed by waterways dotted with stone bridges. Whitewalled, blacktiled buildings line the waterside. Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street preserve the authentic canalside streetlife atmosphere. Suzhou’s most celebrated highlight is its classical gardens, several of which are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Humble Administrator’s Garden and the Lingering Garden artfully create scenes using rocks, hills and ponds. Every step unfolds a new view. They represent the art of Eastern noble manors, embodying the subtle and poetic Oriental aesthetics. This is also the birthplace of Suzhou embroidery and Kunqu Opera, with its silk craftsmanship renowned worldwide. Beyond the ancient city stand modern districts filled with highrise buildings, where old and new urban landscapes blend seamlessly. Sustyle cuisine features light, sweet flavours.
