High Court judgement Exposes Rogue Car Dealers who change Mileage to Cheat Kenyans

The High Court has exposed fraudulent practices among some motor vehicle dealers who manipulate vehicle mileage readings to deceive unsuspecting Kenyans into purchasing old and heavily used cars at inflated prices. In a landmark decision, the court warned that dealers who tamper with vehicle odometers to conceal the actual mileage commit fraud and may face both criminal and civil liability, including orders to refund buyers the purchase price. The warning was issued in Rana Auto Selection Limited v Joseph Kibi Maritim, Civil Appeal No. E115 of 2024, where Justice A.C. Mrima upheld a judgment awarding a car buyer Sh1,541,500 after discovering that the vehicle he had purchased had been sold with a falsified mileage reading.
