In March 1944, in a village in southwest France, a woman of about 60 lay in bed with rheumatism and questioned a wounded stranger. She asked if he was married. He said no. So why, she asked, was he wearing a ring on the finger where a married man wears one? One wrong judgment could hand everyone who'd helped him that morning to the German security police. The young American was a 21-year-old flight officer named Chuck Yeager. Three years later he'd be the first man to fly faster than sound — but first he had to cross the Pyrenees on foot, carrying a badly wounded airman through the snow.
