In August 1941, a young woman walked into the British consulate in Bilbao, her shoes worn through from the mountains. Beside her stood a Scottish soldier who'd spent more than a year hiding in occupied Belgium. She told the officials she had brought him herself — from Brussels, across occupied France, over the Pyrenees on foot. Then she told them something stranger: she could do it again, as many times as they needed. They didn't quite believe her. Her name was Andrée de Jongh, and the escape line she founded would carry hundreds of Allied airmen back into the war. The most remarkable moment comes later — when her captors heard the whole truth and refused to believe it.
