Beating a taller opponent is not about out‑hitting them, it is about exploiting the disadvantages that come with height. In this video, I break down three strategies that turn their height into a weakness. Tall players have longer reach and can take the shuttle higher, but they also have a higher center of gravity, longer limbs, and more mass to move, which makes low shots and quick direction changes much harder for them.
The first strategy is to keep the shuttle low and close to the net. A low serve denies their steep attack, and tight spinning net shots force them to lunge forward and bend much more than a shorter player would. The same applies to a tight drop shot from the backcourt: it pulls them forward, makes them bend low, and then forces them to recover all the way back. These shots drain their energy and often produce weak replies you can attack.
The second strategy is to attack the body and use steep smashes. Instead of smashing side to side, aim at their racket shoulder to cramp their long limbs and force an awkward block. A steep smash that lands between midcourt and front court also forces them to get low to defend, which is far harder for a tall player than for a shorter one. Both shots exploit their height and reduce their defensive control.
The third strategy is to use diagonal shots and flat lifts to make them run. Tall players cover side‑to‑side ground easily, but they struggle with changes in direction because of their higher center of gravity. A flat lift just past them into the back corners forces them to turn and play from a low position. A flat lift to their backhand corner makes them twist their body for an overhead shot, which is difficult for them. And diagonal patterns, such as forehand net to backhand rear, force them to stop, pivot, and travel the longest distance, which is slow and tiring for a tall player.
