25th March 2018 Weardale Way Section 6: White Kirkley to Wolsingham ----- If you would like to support me, I am raising money for surgery in Spain: https://gofund.me/045d82ea ----- After finishing section 5, we continued onto section 6. At first, the walk followed on from the spectacular treats we had been given previously. We passed some impressive lime kilns and a lead mine. We stopped for lunch near Harehope quarry, the place where Frosterley marble was once quarried. Frosterley marble is a dark limestone impregnated with many fossilised corals that when polished resembles a black marble. Fine examples of it can be found in many churches including Durham Cathedral. In its raw form, however, it is not much to look at and the fossils are not always so distinguishable. The quarry was the last feature of worth on this section and really it could be incorporated in the last section if you were to take it to Frosterley instead of White Kirkley. The next part of the walk was one very long slog up hill through mud to see some trees that supposedly look like an elephant. The views were nice but the same view could be had further down. The descent was almost as bad as the ascent... a mud bath all the way to the bottom. We spent a good 5-10 minutes paddling in the Wear trying to clean some of the cack off our boots. A much better route would've been to head back down via the lead mine levels towards Sunniside farm. There were points of interest in the vicinity that the Weardale Way could've included. A missed opportunity. Thank you for watching. Please Like, Comment, and Subscribe. To be continued... Our route: https://gb.mapometer.com/walking/rout...
