The Lonely Chair, Ken Geringer © 2026 Kenneth Geringer. All Rights Reserved. Published by Ishkabibble Publishing Lonely Chair is about the bond we form with our dogs and the love, attachment, and devotion that grows quietly over a lifetime together. For fifteen years, they are simply there. They become part of our routines, our homes, our families, and eventually part of who we are. They sit beside us through good days and bad ones, asking for very little and giving us a kind of unconditional love that is difficult to explain until you've experienced it. And then one day, they're gone. Suddenly, the places where they slept are empty. Their bowl is untouched. The familiar sounds you barely noticed for years are missing. Even an ordinary chair can become a painful reminder of the companion who should still be there. There is something that feels terribly unfair about it. We give them our hearts knowing that their lives will be much shorter than ours. After fifteen years of companionship, we're somehow expected to continue without them, while every familiar corner of the house reminds us that something is missing. Lonely Chair is about that universal experience, the incredible love we have for our dogs, the suffering that comes when we lose them, and how difficult it can be to accept that a companion who was part of our everyday life for so many years is suddenly no longer there.
