A car learned to drive from about 20 hours of simulated driving, on roads that never existed, and then drove itself through a real roundabout in India. Here is what it actually learned in that dream, what can leak out of it, and who checks. In October 2026, the lab Odyssey said a small driving policy built on its world model Odyssey-3 and trained on about 20 hours of simulated driving data drove a car in closed loop on Indian streets, with a safety driver ready to take over. A year earlier, Google DeepMind's Genie 3 showed worlds you can walk through, made up frame by frame. Now Waymo, NVIDIA and robot makers are sending machines to school inside these dreams. We explain how a world model works (it guesses the next frame, like a chatbot guesses the next word), why it only draws what you are looking at, why its physics melts, and why machines trained in simulators keep finding bugs to cheat, from a 2018 agent that learned to stop monsters firing in its dream to boats circling a lagoon on fire. Then we take it back to Nick Bostrom's 2003 simulation argument: does a dream machine you can rent make it more likely we live in a simulation? And finally: who checks what a robot learned before it walks out of the dream? The roundabout, the dream worlds and the robots are illustrations, not real footage from any company or test. A few still backgrounds are AI-generated illustrations, and the narration uses an AI voice. Numbers on screen carry their source. Would you ride in a car that learned to drive in a dream?
