In October 1935, Dutch Schultz — bootlegger, Harlem numbers boss, and one of the most feared men in New York — was shot in the men's room of a Newark chop house. According to Murder, Inc. informants, it happened because he brought the Mafia's new Commission a plan to murder special prosecutor Thomas E. Dewey… and the bosses said no.
This is the story of the Commission's first big decision — and the gangster who had to die first.

Accounts of the Commission's vote and the plot against Thomas E. Dewey come from Murder, Inc. informant testimony (1940–41) and were never tested at a trial for the plot itself. Charles Workman is the only person ever convicted of the Schultz killing.
