On this beautiful and exciting trail in eastern Tennessee, I discuss how hiking is my new ADHD medicine and how this 3-hour dose of Mother Nature will help my nervous system for days. We returned to the magical Rocky Creek Campground to find our way to to Dick Creek Falls. It's quite an adventure to find the falls and figure out how to drop into them. We had so much fun!
My ADHD diagnosis at 52 really helped me why my bodyt feels compelled to go into the woods and exhaust itself frequently. This is much better for me than self medicating with booze. I'm over 1000 days off that stuff on this day. My ADHD blossomed (got more intense) about 100 days after I quit so I really have to stay on top of things. This hike is my medicine for about 3 - 4 days.
Why Hiking Helps the ADHD Brain:
Constant Gentle Input: Uneven terrain, changing scenery, and outdoor sounds give the brain just enough novelty and focus without feeling chaotic.
Movement and Energy Release: Rhythmic walking helps regulate attention and burns off physical restlessness.
Less Mental Noise: Nature replaces modern distractions with a simpler environment that reduces mental overload.
Clear Progress: Moving forward on a trail provides immediate, visible goals that keep motivation high.
Hiking is beneficial for me specifically with these areas where I extra super-powers:
Trail Marking: Evaluates visual attention, processing speed, and cognitive flexibility
Working memory (WMI): Measures brain's ability to hold, manipulate, and work with information over short periods.
Visual-Spatial (VSI): Measures ability to perceive, analyze, and mentally manipulate shapes, patterns, and spatial relationships without using language.
