In 2019, archaeologists in Zambia found two pieces of wood buried in a riverbank. When the results were finally published in 2023, they rewrote the record for the oldest known wooden structure on Earth — from roughly 9,000 years old to at least 476,000 years old. And whoever built it wasn't Homo sapiens. Our species didn't exist yet. Two logs, joined at a right angle by a deliberately cut notch. No known parallel anywhere else in the entire archaeological record.
