Today, I‘m taking you to a place every Guangzhou local visits during Mid-Autumn Festival—the Cultural Park Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival!
The Guangzhou Cultural Park Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival has been held since 1956, making it Guangzhou‘s oldest and largest Mid-Autumn lantern event. This year marks its 58th edition. The 2026 festival is themed “Millennium Commercial Capital · Cantonese Charm of Liwan,” running for 13 nights from September 25 to October 7, featuring 24 large and medium-sized lantern sets and 14 atmospheric lantern displays, all free to the public.
🏮 Three Major Lantern Zones—A New Scene at Every Step
This year’s festival connects three main themed zones: the Main Gate, Central Plaza, and Southwest Plaza, weaving together a dazzling scroll of Cantonese culture.
Main Gate: “Millennium Commercial Capital · Cantonese Charm of Liwan”
Modeled after a Canton porcelain vase from the Thirteen Factories Museum, this lantern set tells the story of Guangzhou‘s millennium of trade through traditional porcelain techniques. The vase depicts the bustling Pearl River port with sails and merchants, complemented by Lychee Bay’s bridges and arcade streets, adorned with Cantonese wood carvings, Manchurian windows, and Cantonese opera masks—the first photo spot upon entering.
Central Plaza: “Cicadas Sing, Lychees Ripen · Inspiring Long Red”
The signature lantern set of this year‘s festival! Blending lychee varieties like Guiwei, Feizixiao, Nuomici, and Guanyin Green with intangible heritage lantern craftsmanship, it recreates the abundance of Lingnan summer. The giant lychee at the center measures 4 meters in diameter, its plump form rendered in translucent silk and light. A cicada perches on top, wings gently quivering—“lychee” sounds like “inspire,” and “cicada” symbolizes “consecutive success” and “amazing feats,” giving the display positive symbolism.
Southwest Plaza: “Hero Flowers Bloom · Red Kapok Radiant”
Centered on the kapok, Guangzhou’s city flower, and incorporating landmarks like Canton Tower and the Greater Bay Area Arts Center, flexible LED strips outline the kapok’s upright bloom, intertwining the “Hero City‘s” red memory with the Bay Area’s modern pulse.
🎭 Intangible Heritage Renewed—Traditional Craftsmanship × Modern Materials
This year‘s festival deeply explores Cantonese folk customs, opera, and music, transforming intangible heritage into visual lantern displays:
“Cantonese Charm in Flowing Light”: Lanterns inspired by Cantonese slang comics—one lantern, one proverb, letting visitors appreciate the wit of Cantonese
“Auspicious Lions Greet the Moon”: Southern lion dance lanterns standing on poles, combining lion dance blessings with Mid-Autumn moon worship
“Opera Garden Sings to the Moon”: Q-version Cantonese opera character lanterns with phoenix feather lanterns and Cantonese windows
“Musical Rhymes in Flowing Light”: Traditional instruments like pipa, guzheng, and gongs transformed into lanterns, turning music into flowing light
The festival continues traditional silk-frame and sculpting techniques while boldly introducing UV printing, satin fabric spray painting, and COB light strips, giving traditional lanterns new life through both craftsmanship and technology.
