Today, we're going on a road trip! Starting from Guangzhou, we're driving west to Huazhou, passing through Yangjiang along the way. This route is about 377 kilometers via the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang Expressway, taking roughly 5 hours. We'll stop in Yangjiang, then continue to Huazhou to explore two hidden gems of western Guangdong.
🌊 Stopover: Yangjiang—A “Treasure City” of Mountains and Sea
About 2.5 hours from Guangzhou, you'll reach Yangjiang. It's the first city extending westward from the Greater Bay Area and a supply port on the Maritime Silk Road.
What to Do in Yangjiang
The most famous spot is Hailing Island, one of China's “Top Ten Most Beautiful Islands”. It features Dajiaowan Maritime Silk Road Tourist Area, China's first 5A-level coastal attraction themed around the Maritime Silk Road. There's also Ten-Mile Silver Beach with fine sand and clear water.
For history buffs, the Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum houses the world-famous “Nanhai No. 1” ancient shipwreck, one of the world's three major shipwreck museums.
To experience local life, head to Xilai Scenic Area. This old street along the Moyang River preserves arcade buildings and ancient docks. At night, the lanterns light up beautifully along the river. Wander around, try pig intestine rolls, beef offal, and sweet soups—the most authentic Yangjiang experience.
What to Eat in Yangjiang
Yangjiang is famous for seafood and local snacks. Pig intestine rolls are a signature snack—rice sheets wrapped with bean sprouts and rice noodles, drizzled with soy sauce and sesame. Chengcun oysters are another local specialty, with nearly 200 years of farming history and a reputation for plump, sweet meat. Also worth trying: Yiyecheng salted fish and Yangjiang black beans.
🍊 Destination: Huazhou—The Land of Exocarpium Citri Grandis
Continuing west for another 2.5 hours brings you to Huazhou in Maoming. This small city is famous for exocarpium citri grandis (a type of citrus peel used in traditional medicine), known as “Southern Ginseng”.
What to Do in Huazhou
Huazhou Confucian Temple is the largest, oldest, and best-preserved temple of its kind in western Guangdong, dating back to the Song Dynasty. It's a provincial heritage site and a 3A-level attraction.
The China Exocarpium Citri Grandis Museum is the best place to learn about this local treasure, showcasing its history, cultivation, and traditional processing techniques.
For nature lovers, Guangken National Tropical Agricultural Park is a 4A-level scenic area covering about 5,000 acres, perfect for families.
What to Eat in Huazhou
Huazhou sesame oil chicken is a local favorite—free-range chicken served with a secret sesame oil blend that's incredibly aromatic. Huazhou beef offal is served “scissors-style”—the owner snips fresh offal into pieces, skewers them, and you eat them on the street with chili sauce.
Huazhou sweet soups are renowned across Guangdong—“Guangdong sweet soup is in Huazhou,” as the saying goes. A bowl of taro sago or mung bean soup costs just a few RMB. Also try rice cakes and Tolo cakes, traditional snacks locals grew up with.
Don't forget to bring home some exocarpium citri grandis as a souvenir—it's great for throat health.
