Great Sand Dunes National Park Backpacking: Sand, Wind, & Stars

For part two (Gila Wilderness Backpacking), see...    • Gila Wilderness Backpacking: Sixty-Five Cr...   This film documents 2.5 days of hiking/backpacking in surreal sand dunes in south central Colorado, at the western foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains (part of the Rocky Mountains). The dunes are adjacent to snow capped 12,000 to 14,000-foot peaks (including Blanca Peak, a Colorado 14'er). The trek started at the the dune parking area and went north over High Dune and then to the Aspen backcountry camp site on the north edge of the dune field. We returned to the parking area by hiking the Sand Ramp Trail around the eastern perimeter of the dune field, crossing Little Medano Creek, Medano Creek, Escape Dune, and Pinon Flats Campground along the way.
