June 2nd, 1967. The Tonight Show. Kirk Douglas and John Wayne were booked together to celebrate The War Wagon, the number one movie in America. Two co-stars. A hit picture. A friendly conversation.
It didn't stay friendly. Eleven years earlier, after Kirk played Vincent van Gogh in Lust for Life, the Duke had told him he never should have taken the part. Kirk's comeback became his favorite story: "It's all make-believe, John. You're not really John Wayne, you know." That night, on live television, Kirk told it again, straight to Wayne's face, and then kept going: the blacklist, the War Wagon set, the picture Wayne "did him a favor" on.
Wayne answered with six words that left the most intense actor in Hollywood with nothing to say: "And you're not Kirk Douglas, Issur."
What followed wasn't a comeback. It was an apology, a disagreement neither man would fake an ending to, a secret about how Cast a Giant Shadow really got made, and the answer Wayne called after Kirk in 1956, which Kirk would only learn in a letter decades later. This is the story of the ragman's son, the druggist's son, and the two names they spent their lives living up to.
This video is a dramatized retelling inspired by the lives and careers of John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. Dialogue and certain events have been recreated for storytelling purposes. The Lust for Life exchange (from Kirk Douglas's autobiography The Ragman's Son), Wayne's role in getting Cast a Giant Shadow financed, and the making of The War Wagon are documented.
