Johnny Carson Saw A Sheriff Padlock A Gas Station On Route 66 In 1959 — Then He Paid Cash September 1959. Route 66, a few miles east of Santa Rosa, New Mexico. A two-pump station with a hand-painted sign: "Hendricks and Son, Since 1935." At ten to noon, a bank man from Albuquerque and the county sheriff pulled onto the gravel with a foreclosure notice and an iron padlock. Walt Hendricks asked for ten more days so his son could start engineering school. The bank said noon. At pump number two, a thin man with California plates stopped pumping gas and watched. Nobody recognized him. In 1959, almost nobody would have. He was the host of an afternoon quiz show called "Who Do You Trust?" Three years later, the whole country would know his name. 📺 In this video: Johnny Carson before he was Johnny Carson The road trip he took alone in the summer of 1959 "Road takes care of you, if you take care of the road" A calculus book in a kid's back pocket "How much would it take?" — "I don't take charity" $2,300 in nightclub money counted onto the hood of a banker's car The sheriff who never used his padlock "You're the fella from 'Who Do You Trust?'" One sentence on the back of a $4.20 gas receipt October 1, 1962: "That's our fella" The envelope of uncashed money orders "Well? Were you worth it?"
