Door Se Bhi Dikhe Teri Lau, Ganpatipule Ki Saatvin Shaam, Ganpati Aarti Chaar Geet Mein | Musicscope

One aarti, one tune, one refrain, heard from four distances as the light goes. This is a new Hindi aarti for Ganpatipule's west-facing Ganpati, sung on the seventh evening of Ganesh Chaturthi as the sun goes into the sea in front of him. The four songs play once in order and the evening moves with them: the arrangement thins song by song, from bell and conch, to dhol and hundreds of voices, to a bansuri over the tide, to waves and one man humming. The tune never changes. It is raag Bhoopali's five notes, a keherwa at a walking pace, and one pujari's voice, a warm, slightly weathered baritone that sings this every evening with no display in it. Ghanta, shankh, jhanj, dhol, bansuri, a tanpura drone and the sea are the whole palette; no harmonium, no keys. The mood is steady and unhurried at the start and grows quieter and more tender as the dark comes in, and the refrain, दूर से भी दिखे तेरी लौ, जय गणपति देवा, stays word for word in all four. Kapoor Jala, Aarti Uthi is the sanctum: the camphor catches on the brass thali, blue then yellow, the flame steadies and stops shaking, the bell is in his hand and the mandap is only just filling behind him. Poora Mandap Ek Sur is ten minutes later with the doors open, when the whole hall takes the refrain and the verses turn to the sea, a door facing west and every boat coming home steering by his light. Lehar Bhi Aarti Kare is two hundred metres down the wet sand after the sun is gone, families with small lamps in their palms, the bansuri carrying the tune better than any voice can, the temple bell arriving late and faint, the waves keeping the pulse the dhol used to. Ek Lau Kinaare Par is an hour after dark from a fishing boat: nets hauled, arms tired, the boat's nose held toward one point of light on the shore, and a man who knows his way home by that flame, humming more of it than he sings. Devanagari captions run the whole way if you want to sing the refrain with the mandap and hum the rest with the boat. Where do you usually hear the aarti from: inside at the thali, out in the crowd, or from far enough away that only the bell reaches you?
