Sawara flourished as a river port after the Ono River became connected to the Tone River in the early Edo period. Its position between major waterways and overland routes made the town an important distribution center, carrying rice and other goods from eastern Japan toward Edo — present-day Tokyo. The wealth created by this trade transformed Sawara into one of the region’s most prosperous merchant towns. It became known for the expression “Edo-masari” — suggesting that the town’s prosperity and culture could rival, or even surpass, Edo itself. Sawara did not simply imitate the culture of the capital. Its merchants absorbed influences from Edo and developed them into a distinct local culture of their own. The historic district was selected in 1996 as the first Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in the Kanto region. Unlike a reconstructed historical attraction, Sawara remains a working town. Several old merchant families continue businesses passed down through generations, which is why the district is often described as a “living townscape.” Sawara is also closely connected to Ino Tadataka, one of the most important cartographers in Japanese history. He entered the Ino merchant family at the age of seventeen, managed its brewing and trading businesses, and served as a community leader in Sawara for more than thirty years. After retiring around the age of fifty, he moved to Edo to study astronomy and surveying. His later expeditions across the country laid the foundation for Japan’s first highly accurate map created through modern surveying techniques. His former residence still stands beside the Ono River. The town’s merchant wealth also gave rise to the Sawara Grand Festival, a float tradition with a history of approximately three hundred years. Its towering festival floats are now included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage listing for Japan’s traditional float festivals. During the day, Sawara is often called “Little Edo,” and visitors gather beside the river to see its old shops, bridges, and merchant houses. Tonight, the shops are closed and the daytime visitors are gone. Only a handful of distant figures and occasional cars appear as rain settles over the quiet historical district. At the beginning of this walk, moderate rain of around 5 mm/h falls across the old streets.
