I take you through the factories that made Coventry one of the great industrial cities of Britain—and the human cost of watching that world disappear.
I trace the story from the first British-built car and Coventry’s bicycle trades through Daimler, Jaguar, Triumph, Massey Ferguson, Alvis, Coventry Climax and the wartime shadow factories. Along the way, I look at the cars, tractors, aircraft, weapons, telephones and taxis made by generations of skilled workers.
I also examine why the factories closed, how foreign competition, consolidation and industrial decline changed the city, and why the silence spread beyond factory gates into entire communities. The buildings may be gone, but the names and what they made still matter.
