Walmart keeps more goods in its warehouses than any other company in America — $61.1B worth. Amazon, which barely registered when this chart starts, now sits on $38.6B.
This is inventory: goods a company has already paid for and has not sold yet. Boxes on pallets, cars on lots, chips in trays, drugs in distribution centres. Every quarter, every large US company, straight from their filings with the SEC.
Where it ends: Walmart $61.1B, Amazon $38.6B, Home Depot $26.0B, McKesson $25.9B, Cencora $21.4B, NVIDIA $20.5B.
Watch for the pandemic years, when retailers ordered double and every bar swells at once, and for NVIDIA arriving near the top with nothing but chips.
Banks and insurers are left out on purpose: what they call inventory is not goods.
Data: SEC XBRL company filings, InventoryNet, 2011-2026.
