“Seek and Find” by Franklin E. Belden is a beautiful invitation to every weary and burdened soul to find rest, strength, mercy, and hope in Jesus Christ.
Beginning with the comforting words, “Burdened soul, there’s rest in Jesus,” this historic Christian hymn points the listener away from fear and discouragement and toward the One who hears when we call. Its message is simple but deeply reassuring: those who seek Christ will find Him. Those who come to Him with their burdens will find compassion. And those who grow weary in the struggles of this life can look forward to an eternal home where sorrow will be no more.
The refrain, “Seek and find, seek and find,” echoes one of Scripture’s great promises: “Seek, and ye shall find” (Matthew 7:7). Throughout the hymn, Belden reminds us that God sees the one who kneels in prayer, hears the fearful heart that calls upon Him, strengthens the weak, forgives those who confess their sins, and offers eternal life to those who put their trust in Christ.
“Seek and Find” was written by Franklin E. Belden and published in 1881 in Better Than Pearls: Sacred Songs Expressly Adapted for Gospel Meetings. The original tune was composed by Frank M. Davis. Though written more than a century ago, its message remains just as meaningful today: Jesus is still the refuge of the weary, the hope of the discouraged, and the answer for the searching soul.
Franklin Edson Belden (1858–1945) was one of the most prolific hymn writers and composers associated with the early Seventh-day Adventist Church. Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, Belden began composing music while still a young man and went on to write numerous hymn texts, gospel songs, and tunes. He was known for his remarkable ability to compose both words and music rapidly, sometimes writing a complete song while listening to a sermon and performing it afterward. Belden also contributed extensively to the 1886 Seventh-day Adventist Hymn and Tune Book and later became closely associated with Christ in Song, one of the most influential hymn collections in Adventist history. His hymns include such enduring songs as “I Will Sing of Jesus’ Love,” “There’s No Other Name Like Jesus,” “Let Every Lamp Be Burning,” “Look for the Way-Marks,” and “We Know Not the Hour.”
May this hymn encourage you to bring every burden to Christ. Whether you are searching for peace, struggling with fear, longing for forgiveness, or simply weary from the trials of life, the invitation remains:
Seek, and ye shall find.
Matthew 7:7 — “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
Matthew 11:28 — “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
LYRICS:
Verse 1
Burdened soul, there’s rest in Jesus;
Seek and find, seek and find;
From our ev’ry load He frees us—
Great is His compassion kind;
He who careth for us all
Will uphold us lest we fall;
For whene’er we kneel, He sees us,
And will answer when we call.
Chorus
Seek and find, seek and find,
All ye laden, weak and weary,
Seek and find, seek and find,
Seek, and ye shall find.
Verse 2
Would we share the Saviour’s blessing?
Seek and find, seek and find;
Unto all, their sins confessing,
Will His mercy be inclined.
Are we weak and faint with fear?
If we speak, He waits to hear;
And His wondrous love expressing,
Will show us strength and cheer.
Chorus
Seek and find, seek and find,
All ye laden, weak and weary,
Seek and find, seek and find,
Seek, and ye shall find.
Verse 3
Would we dwell above forever?
Seek and find, seek and find;
There are ties no hand can sever,
That in love our hearts shall bind.
Are we weary of the strife
In this world with trouble rife?
We may dwell where sorrow never
Mars a glad, eternal life.
Chorus
Seek and find, seek and find,
All ye laden, weak and weary,
Seek and find, seek and find,
Seek, and ye shall find.
