Tai Yai Traditional Dance – Fon To 🇹🇭✨
The Fon To performance by the young performers of Mok Cham is a beautiful and ancient traditional art of the Tai Yai (Shan) people. It is deeply connected to their spiritual beliefs and Buddhism.
According to Tai Yai folklore, the “To” is a mythical creature from the Himavanta forest, a legendary forest in Buddhist cosmology. Its appearance varies by region. Some people describe it as resembling a deer, while others compare it to a qilin or a serow, with horns and beautiful, shaggy fur.
✨ Buddhist Origins
According to legend, when the Lord Buddha ascended to Tavatimsa Heaven to preach to his mother and later returned to the human world on the end of Buddhist Lent, mythical creatures from the Himavanta forest, including the peacock-like Kinnari (Kinkara) and the To, joyfully performed dances to welcome him and pay homage to the Buddha.
