In 1845, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror entered the Canadian Arctic with 129 officers and crew. Not one returned.
The final recovered message said the ships had been trapped in ice, Sir John Franklin was dead, and 105 survivors were abandoning the vessels to march south. For more than a century, the ships themselves remained missing.
This episode follows the Franklin Expedition from its confident departure through the Victory Point note, the impossible retreat, Inuit testimony, the discoveries of Erebus and Terror, and the newest DNA evidence. In 2026, researchers identified four additional sailors, bringing the total positively identified to six.
Was lead poisoning responsible? Why were the ships abandoned? Did some survivors return to them? And what does the evidence now tell us about the final months of the expedition?
The Unfinished Record investigates history’s unresolved cases using original narration, evidence-led research, and cinematic historical reconstruction.
