The Body Found Floating In A Pond: The Murder Of CeCe Dove | Secrets Of The Morgue

The mutilated body of a transgender woman is found floating in a pond outside Cleveland. The medical examiner discovers the tip of a knife embedded in the victim’s skull, but the murder weapon is never recovered. Detectives close in on three prime suspects, but with multiple versions of what happened, it’s up to the medical examiner to find a forensic link between the victim and her killer. In this episode of Secrets of the Morgue, a man in Olmsted Township, Ohio, a quiet bedroom community outside Cleveland, looks out of an apartment window in April 2013 and sees what he thinks is either a body or a mannequin floating face down in a retention pond. For a newly promoted detective, it’s his first homicide. The victim has ropes knotted around the chest and waist, a cinder block and lead pipe tied to weigh the body down, and more than 40 sharp force injuries, mostly to the head and neck. With fingerprints destroyed by months in icy water and no murder weapon found despite days of searching and sonar scans of the pond, the forensic pathologist uses surviving skin, teeth and organs to build a profile, helping detectives identify the victim as 20-year-old CeCe Dove, a young trans woman who had been missing since Christmas. As investigators uncover taxi dispatch recordings, a chain of sublet tenants and conflicting accounts of what happened inside the apartment, the case also highlights the violence faced by transgender women, particularly trans women of colour.
