A hybrid generative ambient performance featuring Pattern Selector Ambient 4.
This video showcases the mixing process on the SSL BiG SiX analog console, with a picture-in-picture window showing the patch running live inside VCV Rack.
Instead of using an internal software mixer, the entire patch is multi-tracked into the analog domain via the VCV Audio 16 module to take full advantage of physical channel EQs, analog compression, and hardware summing circuitry.
Here is the exhaustive technical breakdown of each digital voice and its corresponding hardware channel on the desk:
Track 1 (Granular Voice): Macro Oscillator 2 (Audible Instruments) in granular formant oscillator mode, triggered by a Re-Burst (Repelzen) burst generator driven by a Count Modula Multi-Step Sequencer. The pitch is generated by combining the multi-step sequencer output with a pink noise signal sent through a Sample & Hold, all quantized to E Minor via JW Modules.👉 Routed to: SSL Channel 1 (Mono).
Track 2 (Bass): Bogaudio VCO utilizing both square and sine wave outputs simultaneously, sequenced from a Multi-Step Sequencer. The mix of these signals is sent to a Chow Tape module for subtle saturation, with the channel level modulated by an LFO.👉 Routed to: SSL Channel 2 (Mono).
Track 3 (Pad): Pad based on the Surge XT Wavetable VCO, sequenced from a Multi-Step Sequencer. The V/oct signal is converted into chords in the digital domain using Aaron Static's Scale CV and Diatonic CV modules.👉 Routed to: SSL Channel 5-6 (Stereo).
Track 4 (Texture): Surge XT S&H Noise VCO modulated by a VCV Random module and filtered through an Audible Instruments Liquid Filter in BP2 (2-pole Bandpass) mode.👉 Routed to: SSL Channel 3 (Mono).
Track 5 (Melody/Toy): Audible Instruments Macro Oscillator in "Toy" mode, sequenced by a Count Modula 8-Step Sequencer. The trigger signal passes through a Bernoulli Gate to add probability to the notes, and the final audio is processed by a Chronoblob delay.👉 Routed to: SSL Channel 7-8 (Stereo).
Track 6 (Bouncing Ball): Bogaudio VCO sequenced by Bidoo's ChUTE to generate bouncing-ball style sequences. This is triggered by an Impromptu Gate Seq 64, while the pitch signal is generated via a noise + Sample & Hold + quantizer combo.👉 Routed to: SSL Channel 4 (Mono).
Track 7 (String Chords): Surge XT String VCO playing chords, sequenced from the same Impromptu Gate Seq 64. Its V/oct signal is converted to polyphonic progressions using Aaron Static's Scale CV and Diatonic CV modules.👉 Routed to: SSL Channel 11-12 (Stereo).
The Analog Processing & Mastering Chain:
Parallel Compression (Aux 1): Tracks are driven via Aux 1 into the console's integrated SSL Master Bus Compressor for added parallel punch, cohesion, and weight.
Reverb Routing (Aux 2): Aux 2 on the SSL is used to feed the Valley Plateau reverb externally. The wet signal returns physically onto SSL Channel 9-10 (Stereo), allowing full tactile control over the mix space from the desk.
Master Bus Glue: The main stereo mix (Main Out) goes straight from the SSL console into a hardware Stam Audio SA-4000 compressor (an SSL 4000 G-Comp replica). Settings applied: Ratio 2, Attack 30ms, Release Auto to achieve impeccable analog glue, gentle gain reduction, and perfect transparency.
