The journey of Shri Rama into exile takes a deeply emotional turn in Sargas 44–47 of the Valmiki Ramayana. As Rama leaves Ayodhya, the people cannot bear to be separated from their beloved prince. They follow his chariot, hoping that their devotion and pleas might convince him to return. But Rama remains firm in his commitment to Dharma and his father’s promise. At the same time, Sumitra consoles the grieving Kausalya, reminding her of Rama’s greatness and assuring her that Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana will remain protected by their own virtue and righteousness. The journey continues to the banks of the Tamasa River, where Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Sumantra spend their first night of exile. Rama sees the suffering of the citizens who have followed him and makes a difficult decision. Before dawn, he instructs Sumantra to take the chariot away in a way that will prevent the citizens from continuing to follow them. When the people awaken, they discover that Rama has gone. Their sorrow is overwhelming. They return to Ayodhya, only to find the once joyful city transformed by grief and silence. In Sargas 44–47, witness: 🙏 Sarga 44 — Sumitra Consoles Kausalya Sumitra reminds Kausalya of Rama’s extraordinary virtues and Dharma, assuring her that Rama is strong, righteous, and capable of overcoming the hardships of the forest. 🙏 Sarga 45 — The People Follow Rama The citizens of Ayodhya refuse to leave Rama. They follow his chariot and plead with him to return, demonstrating their profound love for their prince. The journey reaches the banks of the Tamasa River. 🙏 Sarga 46 — The First Night in Exile Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spend their first night beside the Tamasa. Rama reflects on the sorrow of Ayodhya and, concerned for the citizens, asks Sumantra to drive away before they awaken. 🙏 Sarga 47 — Ayodhya Without Rama The citizens awaken to discover that Rama has disappeared. Their grief turns to despair as they return to Ayodhya and find the city stripped of its happiness. This is one of the most poignant passages of Ayodhya Kanda. Rama chooses Dharma. The citizens choose Rama. Rama chooses to protect them by leaving them behind. And Ayodhya loses its joy. The physical journey into the forest has begun, but the emotional separation between Rama and Ayodhya is only beginning. 🙏 Experience this sacred chapter of Valmiki Maharshi’s Ramayana through cinematic devotional storytelling from Bhakti Dhwani.
