The emotional departure of Shri Rama from Ayodhya unfolds in Sargas 40–43 of the Valmiki Ramayana.
The moment has finally arrived. Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana take leave of King Dasharatha and the royal family and begin their journey into exile. As the chariot leaves Ayodhya, the citizens follow in overwhelming grief. Dasharatha himself follows Rama's chariot, unable to bear the separation from his beloved son.
In Sarga 40, Sumitra gives Lakshmana profound guidance before his departure, reminding him that Rama is his father, Sita is his mother, and the forest should be regarded as Ayodhya while he serves Rama. Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana then depart in Sumantra's chariot as Ayodhya weeps.
Sarga 41 portrays an Ayodhya devastated by Rama's departure. The citizens mourn and question how their beloved protector could have been sent away. The entire city seems to lose its joy and vitality.
In Sarga 42, Dasharatha watches helplessly as Rama disappears from his sight. Overcome with grief, he turns against Kaikeyi and longs for his son to return.
Finally, Sarga 43 brings the focus to Queen Kausalya's lamentation. Seeing Dasharatha consumed by sorrow, she expresses the unbearable pain of separation from Rama and longs for the day when Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana will return to Ayodhya.
In Sargas 40–43, witness:
🙏 Sarga 40 — Rama Leaves Ayodhya

🙏 Sarga 41 — Ayodhya Without Rama
The city is plunged into grief. The people mourn Rama's departure and feel that Ayodhya has lost its protector and its happiness.
🙏 Sarga 42 — Dasharatha’s Despair
Dasharatha watches Rama disappear into the distance and collapses under the weight of his grief. His anguish over losing Rama becomes unbearable.
🙏 Sarga 43 — Kausalya’s Lament
Kausalya mourns the separation from her beloved son and expresses her longing to see Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana return safely to Ayodhya.
This section captures one of the most heartbreaking moments of the Ramayana:
Rama leaves his kingdom.
Sita and Lakshmana follow him.
Ayodhya falls silent.
Dasharatha and Kausalya are consumed by grief.
Yet Rama remains steadfast, choosing Dharma over comfort, duty over power, and truth over his own happiness.
