Sigurd was raised by Regin, a cunning smith, who reforged for him the sword Gram from the broken shards of his father Sigmund's blade; it was so keen that it split Regin's anvil in two. Regin urged the young hero to kill the dragon Fafnir, who had once been Regin's own brother and now lay coiled on a cursed hoard of gold on Gnitaheath. Sigurd dug a pit on the track where the dragon crawled down to drink, hid in it, and when the great beast passed over him he drove the sword up into its heart. As Fafnir died he spoke with Sigurd and warned him that the gold would be his death. Regin asked Sigurd to roast the dragon's heart for him. When Sigurd touched it to see whether it was done, he burned his finger, put it in his mouth, and at once understood the speech of birds. The nuthatches in the trees were saying that Regin meant to betray him, and that Sigurd should eat the heart himself and become the wisest of men. Sigurd struck first, ate part of the heart, loaded the gold onto his horse Grani, and rode away, while the birds sang of a maiden sleeping on a mountain inside a ring of fire. This is the story that leads to Brynhildr, the sleeping valkyrie. A dark folk ballad about a pit, a sword and a heart that taught a hero the language of birds.

LYRICS
(Sigurd)
Old Regin the smith raised a fearless boy
In the forge by the mountain stream
He mended a sword from his father's shards
And it split the anvil clean
"There's a beast on the heath," old Regin said
"Lying coiled on a hoard of gold
Fafnir was my brother once
Now a serpent, cruel and old"
Sigurd, Sigurd, under the ground
Waiting there with the sword in hand
Down came the dragon to drink at dawn
And the blade rose from the sand
(Sigurd)
He dug a pit on the dragon's road
Where it crawled down to drink each day
The earth shook hard, the venom poured
But he waited where he lay
The dragon spoke as it breathed its last
"That gold will bring your end"
Then Regin came with a hungry smile
"Roast me the heart, my friend"
He turned the spit by the crackling fire
And he touched it to see if done
He burned his thumb and he sucked it clean
And he heard the birds, every one
"There sits Sigurd, roasting the heart"
Sang a bird in the birch above
"He should eat it himself and be wise
For Regin has no love
Regin will kill him and take the gold"
Then Sigurd drew his sword
Sigurd, Sigurd, now you know
Every word that the wild birds say
Take the gold and ride on Grani
Before the break of day
(Sigurd)
He loaded the gold on his grey horse's back
Rings and helmets and golden mail
The birds sang on as he rode away
Down a winding mountain trail
"On the mountain high there's a hall of fire
And a maiden asleep inside
Ride, Sigurd, ride through the flame
And wake her to be your bride"
Sigurd, Sigurd, under the sky
With the gold and the songs of birds
Ride to the mountain ringed with fire
Where she sleeps without a word
Sigurd
(Sigurd)
