Imagine standing on the shores of ancient Japan in 166 AD, watching a Roman fleet arrive with thousands of legionaries, facing warriors who have never heard of Rome.
What happens when the Roman Empire sends an army across the Indian Ocean and attempts to conquer Japan during the age of ancient Wa?
In this historical what-if, we follow a Roman expedition at the height of the Empire's power as it sails east toward the Japanese islands. We explore what would happen if Roman legionaries landed in northern Kyushu, faced the warriors of Wa, attacked fortified villages, and attempted to conquer a mountainous land thousands of kilometers from Rome.
The answer may have less to do with Roman military power than you think.
Topics covered: the Roman Empire's contact with East Asia, Roman gold medallions found at Oc Eo, the Roman mission to China in 166 AD, the voyage across the Indian Ocean, Roman merchant ships and naval limitations, the warriors of ancient Wa, Japanese weapons and fortified villages, Roman legion tactics, the first battle between Rome and Wa, the challenges of siege warfare, Japan's mountainous terrain, typhoons and supply lines, the story of Gan Ying's journey in 97 AD, and whether Rome could actually conquer ancient Japan.

This video is created for educational and entertainment purposes. While every effort is made to present the historical background accurately, some details are simplified, interpreted, or used in a fictional what-if scenario for storytelling.
Much of what we know about Rome's contact with East Asia and the people of ancient Japan comes from Chinese historical records, archaeology, and later written accounts, all of which have limitations. Historians may disagree on the interpretation of evidence, ancient populations, military capabilities, and the details of long-distance trade.
This video does not claim that the Roman Empire actually attempted to invade Japan. The hypothetical scenario is used to explore how distance, ocean travel, geography, Roman military organization, fortified settlements, local alliances, weather, and supply lines might have affected such a campaign.
The Roman expedition's size and the hypothetical battles are speculative elements created for this scenario, not established historical events.
