In 2003, as war tore through Baghdad and thousands of people fled the city, two Chinese men went in the opposite direction — they opened Chinese restaurants in a war zone. One was Liu Lei, a former IT worker from Shenzhen. He brought $3,700, Chinese seasonings, and a simple business plan: open a restaurant and sell Chinese food to American soldiers. He served Kung Pao Chicken and American-style Chinese food by day, sold whiskey at night, and counted thousands of dollars in daily revenue — while mortar shells were falling around the Green Zone. The other was Chen Xianzhong, a Chinese businessman who had lived in Iraq since 1984. During the invasion, he opened an even larger restaurant in Baghdad, which eventually became a refuge for journalists, doctors, workers and ordinary people trapped by the war.
