The Count Is Back
Phantom Radio | Ghost Stories & Music — 87.9 FM
Eight signs appeared around the neighborhood that morning.
Nobody saw them being installed.
Nobody knew who paid for them.
They simply appeared along familiar roads, at intersections people traveled every day.
Each carried the same message:
— 87.9 FM
By sunset, people were already talking about them.
By midnight...
the signs were no longer the strangest thing happening.
One driver noticed the first sign on his way home.
October had settled over the neighborhood. Streetlights were flickering awake, leaves scraped across the pavement, and the last bit of daylight was disappearing behind the trees.
He passed the sign.
Then his radio crackled.
Static.
He changed the station.
More static.
Then the dial began moving by itself.
—87.9 FM.
A voice came through the speakers.
Calm.
Deep.
Almost welcoming.
“Keep driving.”
A pause.
“You're almost there.”
The driver stared at the radio.
Almost where?
Another turn.
Another familiar street.
Then he saw the second sign.
—87.9 FM
The static returned.
He switched the radio off.
It turned itself back on.
87.9 FM.
The voice returned.
“We can see you.”
He immediately looked through the windshield.
Empty road.
Dark houses.
Streetlights.
Nothing else.
“Who is this?”
Static rolled through the speakers.
Then came the answer.
“You already know.”
The road should have taken him home.
Instead, every turn seemed to bring him past another sign.
Three.
Four.
Five.
The neighborhood was familiar, yet somehow the streets no longer connected the way he remembered.
Then an unfamiliar voice appeared beneath the static.
Older.
Almost theatrical.
A faint laugh followed.
The driver looked into his rearview mirror.
For a fraction of a second...
someone was sitting in the back seat.
Pale skin.
Dark clothing.
Eyes fixed directly on him.
He spun around.
The seat was empty.
The radio crackled.
And the voice whispered:
“Keep driving.”
He passed the sixth sign.
Then the seventh.
By now, the radio signal was perfectly clear.
No static.
No interference.
Just an old piece of music playing softly through the speakers.
The kind of music that sounded like it belonged to another lifetime.
Then he saw the final sign.
Number eight.
His headlights swept across it.
But this one was different.
Someone had added three words beneath the frequency.
THE COUNT IS BACK.
The music stopped.
A clock chimed somewhere through the broadcast.
Then came laughter.
Low.
Slow.
Familiar.
The following morning, all eight signs were still there.
People drove past them on their way to work.
Children saw them from school buses.
Neighbors wondered what exactly Phantom Radio was advertising.
But one person never made it home that night.
His car was eventually discovered parked beside the road.
Doors locked.
Keys still in the ignition.
Radio still on.
87.9 FM.
No driver.
No footprints.
Nothing unusual...
except for a small amount of dirt scattered across the passenger seat.
Dark soil.
The kind you'd find in a cemetery.
That evening, Phantom Radio interrupted its regular programming.
The announcer said:
“Eight signs were placed around the neighborhood today.”
Static.
“If you've seen one...”
A faint laugh could be heard underneath the transmission.
“You already know where to find us.”
Then another voice emerged.
Older than the announcer.
Closer to the microphone.
“Good evening.”
Silence.
Then—
“Did you miss me?”
THE COUNT IS BACK
Eight signs.
One frequency.
And something hiding between the stations.
Phantom Radio — 87.9 FM
We'll be waiting after dark.
