Four different admissions experts have now told this show the same thing, and Cyndy McDonald puts it most bluntly: passion projects are the most overrated thing in college admissions.
She founded the association that credentials independent college consultants, she trains them at UCLA Extension, and she built the first college planning software before most of the industry had email. After 30 years, her advice starts earlier than you'd expect.
Dr. Joe sits down with Cyndy McDonald, certified educational planner, founder of the Higher Education Consultants Association, instructor in UCLA Extension's College Counseling Certificate program, and the creator of the first college planning software, now known as Guided Path. Cyndy was a first-generation student in rural Colorado whose father told her she could go to college but he couldn't pay for it, and she's spent three decades building the infrastructure that helps other families avoid the same isolation. She explains her student-first match methodology, why the search starts with self-reflection rather than rankings, and how to tell a good consultant from a bad one in the first meeting.
