The Secret Behind D Day’s Impossible Floating Harbor The Allies faced a massive problem after landing in Normandy: capturing a major French port could take too long, but an invasion army needed an enormous and continuous flow of vehicles, fuel, ammunition, equipment, and supplies. Their solution was to bring the harbor with them. The Mulberry Harbours were enormous prefabricated artificial ports whose components were constructed in Britain, towed across the English Channel, and assembled off the Normandy coast after D-Day. They incorporated sunken ships, huge concrete caissons, floating pier heads, and flexible roadways known as “Whales.” This documentary explores how engineers designed the Mulberry system, how its gigantic components crossed the Channel, and how an artificial harbor helped sustain the Allied armies after the Normandy landings.
