Post-Match Commentary :
#8 Zhao Ruirui (21, 1.97m) who was the best of the World Cup 2003, broke her leg in February during training that year. Despite this setback, her coach decided to bring her to the Olympics. However, she didn’t play in the World Grand Prix final and was a substitute in the game. Unfortunately, her leg broke again after just two minutes of upcourt play and she didn’t return to the team until 2008. Consequently, the Chinese squad had to use 11 players to complete the Olympics.
#15 Logan Tom (23, 1.84m) was the MVP of the World Grand Prix. The USA easily won against China 3:0 in both the Swiss Game and the World Grand Prix final round. The two matches were both 3:0 with significant set score differences. The Chinese squad struggled to find a way to beat the USA, who seemed to read their players well.
After #8’s injury, #18 Zhang Ping (22, 1.88m) took her place. All the practice in the warm-up games finally paid off. The Chinese team players were in good shape and stable throughout the Olympics. Although they didn’t play pool in earlier games, the head coach managed to maintain the players’ standards. In contrast, the USA players’ peak performance appeared before the Olympics. Logon was substituted by another young player and Phipps was no longer in good form.
